JD(U) Leader KC Tyagi and Others Criticize UP’s Kanwar Yatra Order

Patna (Bihar) [India], July 19: A controversy has erupted over an order in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar, asking eateries on the Kanwar Yatra route to display their owners’ names. Janata Dal (United) leader KC Tyagi has urged the Uttar Pradesh government to review or revoke the order.

KC Tyagi’s Statement

KC Tyagi stated that a larger Kanwar Yatra takes place in Bihar without such orders. He emphasized that these restrictions violate the principles of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas’ promoted by the Prime Minister. Tyagi called for the order to be reviewed and revoked.

RLD’s Response

RLD National General Secretary Trilok Tyagi also criticized the order, calling it wrong. He argued that religion and caste should not be brought into politics and questioned why there is no prohibition on alcohol if the concern is about religious purity.

UP Government’s Mandate

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath mandated that food and beverage shops along Kanwar routes display the name and identity of the operator to maintain the sanctity of the pilgrims’ faith. Action will also be taken against those selling halal-certified products.

Opposition’s Criticism

Opposition parties have accused the UP government of targeting one community. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav called the order a ‘social crime’ and urged court intervention. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi likened the order to apartheid and Nazi-era practices, challenging the Chief Minister to issue a written order.

Kanwar Yatra

The Kanwar Yatra, a sacred pilgrimage of devotees of Lord Shiva, is scheduled to begin on July 22.
