JD Vance Criticizes US Military Aid to Ukraine, Warns of Chinese Threat to Taiwan

Republican Vice-Presidential candidate and Ohio Senator JD Vance has voiced concerns over the United States’ military aid to Ukraine. Vance, who is running alongside former US President Donald Trump, believes that this aid has left the US unable to support Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion.

In an interview with YouTuber Shawn Ryan, Vance criticized US President Joe Biden’s policy, stating, “I think [Washington] has left Taiwan in a really crappy position, because we sent all our weapons to Ukraine.” He added that China might make a “real military move” on Taiwan sooner rather than later, although it has not done so yet due to various reasons, including the potential for heavy casualties and Chinese President Xi Jinping’s possibly weakened political position.

Vance suggested that a conflict over Taiwan is less likely before 2027, as Xi’s position could strengthen over time. He also mentioned that Beijing might believe it can control Taiwan through subversion rather than invasion.

Meanwhile, Taiwan continues to report increased Chinese military activity. Recently, Taiwan detected seven Chinese aircraft, six naval vessels, and one official ship operating around its territory. Taiwan has been self-governed since 1949, but China considers it part of its territory and insists on eventual reunification, by force if necessary.

In July, Taiwan President Lai Ching-te accused China of misinterpreting a United Nations resolution to justify its military activities against Taiwan, linking it to the ‘One China’ principle, which states that there is only one China and Taiwan is part of it.
