Jay Shah’s Potential ICC Chair Tenure and Changes in Women’s Cricket
Jay Shah, the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is set to become the International Cricket Council (ICC) chair on December 1. The ICC Board, which recently met in Dubai, has recommended changing the chair’s term from three terms of two years each to two terms of three years each. This recommendation aims to provide stability and continuity, and it will be circulated for approval among ICC members.
Jay Shah was elected unopposed to replace the outgoing ICC chair, Greg Barclay. The ICC Board also made changes to the men’s cricket committee, appointing New Zealand businessman Scott Weenink as the Full Member representative and Scott Edwards, the Netherlands captain, as the Associate Member representative.
In women’s cricket, the ICC Board approved the next women’s future tours programme (FTP) for 2025-2029, which will be announced soon. The ICC chief executives’ committee has shifted the annual update for women’s rankings from October 1 to May 1. Teams must now play at least eight matches per format to ensure accurate rankings.
The process for Associate teams to gain ODI status has been formalized. Currently, 16 women’s teams have ODI status. For the 2025-2029 cycle, the top two Associate teams qualifying for the Women’s ODI World Cup qualifier in 2025 will gain ODI status. The ICC has also approved two annual T20I tournaments for Associate teams from 2025 to 2028, preparing for the 16-team women’s T20 World Cup in 2030.
