Jay Shah Announces New Coach for Team India Ahead of Sri Lanka Series

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah has confirmed that Team India’s new head coach will join the team for the upcoming Sri Lanka series. The Men in Blue are set to tour Sri Lanka for a three-match T20I series and three ODIs starting on July 27.

Rahul Dravid’s tenure as head coach ended after India won the T20 World Cup 2024, defeating South Africa by seven runs in the final. Speaking to reporters in Barbados, Shah mentioned that the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) has interviewed and shortlisted two candidates for the head coach position. The final decision will be announced after the BCCI members return to Mumbai.

In the meantime, former India cricketer VVS Laxman will serve as the interim coach for the Zimbabwe tour. Shah stated, “Both coach and selector appointments will be made shortly. CAC has interviewed and shortlisted two names and after reaching Mumbai whatever they have decided we will go by that. VVS Laxman is going to Zimbabwe but a new coach will join from the Sri Lanka series.”

Gautam Gambhir, a key player in India’s 2007 ICC World Twenty20 and 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup victories, is a strong candidate for the head coach role. He has been praised for his recent success with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), who won their third IPL title under his mentorship.
