Jay Shah and Rajeev Shukla Visit New Cricket Stadium Site in Varanasi

Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) [India], September 23: Jay Shah, the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and newly-elected Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), along with BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla, visited the construction site of a new international cricket stadium in Varanasi on Monday.

The two officials inspected the ongoing work and spoke with the engineers present at the site. Last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for this stadium in his Lok Sabha constituency. The event was also attended by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, BCCI President Roger Binny, and Vice-President Rajeev Shukla.

Addressing a large gathering after laying the foundation stone, PM Modi highlighted the success of Indian athletes at global events as a sign of the changing national outlook towards sports. He mentioned that the government is supporting sportspersons at every level, citing the TOPS scheme as an example.

Once completed, the stadium will have a seating capacity of more than 30,000. The Uttar Pradesh government has spent Rs 121 crore on land acquisition, while the BCCI will invest Rs 330 crore in its construction. The stadium’s design is inspired by Lord Shiva, featuring crescent-shaped roof covers, trident-shaped floodlights, and a seating arrangement resembling the steps at ghats.

This will be Uttar Pradesh’s third international cricket stadium, following those in Kanpur and Lucknow.
