Jasprit Bumrah to Lead India in First Test Against Australia if Rohit Sharma is Unavailable
India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, has announced that Jasprit Bumrah will captain the Indian men’s cricket team if regular captain Rohit Sharma is unavailable for the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. The match is set to begin on November 22 in Perth. Gambhir confirmed this during a press conference in Mumbai, stating, “Bumrah is vice-captain; if Rohit is not available, he is going to lead in Perth.”
While Rohit Sharma is not currently with the team, he has not been officially ruled out of the series opener. Gambhir mentioned, “At the moment, there is no confirmation but we will let you know exactly what the situation will be. Hopefully, he’s going to be available, but everything we’re going to get to know at the start of the series.”
India faces a challenging path to the World Test Championship (WTC) final after a disappointing series against New Zealand. To secure a spot in the WTC final in London, India needs a 4-0 series win against Australia. The series will continue with the second Test in Adelaide from December 6 to 10, followed by matches in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney.
