Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida Steps Down Amid Political Scandal
Tokyo, Japan – Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has announced that he will not run in the upcoming leadership election for the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) next month. Kishida made this announcement during a news conference on Wednesday.
Kishida stated, “In the upcoming presidential election, it’s necessary to show the people that the Liberal Democratic Party will change. To this end, a transparent and open election, and free and open debate are important. The first easy-to-understand step that indicates that the LDP will change is for me to step back.”
During his tenure, Kishida’s government promoted wage increases, investment to end 30 years of deflation, transformed energy policy to meet rising electricity demand, implemented measures to address the declining birthrate, and strengthened Japan’s defense capabilities. He expressed pride in these achievements.
Kishida’s decision follows a political funding scandal within the LDP, involving over 80 lawmakers and unreported political funds raised through party event tickets. This scandal has significantly impacted his approval ratings, which have dropped to the 20 percent range.
Despite stepping down, Kishida will continue to serve as a regular LDP member and has not endorsed any candidate for the next party chief and prime minister. Potential candidates for the LDP leadership include former Defence Minister Shigeru Ishiba, Digital Minister Taro Kono, LDP Secretary General Toshimitu Motegi, Economic Security Minister Sanae Takaichi, former Environment Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, and former Economic Security Minister Takayuki Kobayashi.
Local election losses earlier this year have also contributed to the call for new leadership within the LDP. Kishida, who became Prime Minister in October 2021, hosted the Group of Seven summit in Hiroshima in 2023.
