Japanese Encephalitis Claims 10 Lives in Assam, Says Dr. Abhijit Sarma
In Assam, the vector-borne disease Japanese Encephalitis (JE) has resulted in 10 deaths at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) this year. Dr. Abhijit Sarma, Superintendent of GMCH, reported that since April 1, 44 cases have been admitted, with 25 still under treatment. ‘Yesterday we lost 4 cases. We have lost 10 cases until now,’ he said. Preventive measures include wearing long-sleeved clothing, using mosquito nets, and getting immunized. Assam has seen a rise in vector-borne diseases, with the highest JE-related deaths recorded in 2006.
