Jammu and Kashmir’s Green Elections: Planting Trees at Polling Stations

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Electoral Officer PK Pole announced on Friday that the upcoming assembly elections will include green initiatives. Around 10-12 plants will be planted at every polling station to address rising temperatures and global warming.

PK Pole stated, “The security has been put in place. We are conducting green elections. Environment is becoming a concern for the world. Temperatures are increasing. Global warming is there. 10-12 plants will be planted at every polling station.”

Additionally, home voting facilities introduced during the recent Lok Sabha elections will continue, making voting easier for elderly citizens and persons with disabilities. Voter facilitation centres will also be established to ensure polling staff can cast their votes.

The elections will be held in three phases: September 18, September 25, and October 1, with the counting of votes on October 8. These are the first assembly polls in Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370.

Jammu and Kashmir has 90 Assembly constituencies, with 7 seats reserved for SCs and 9 for STs. There are 88.06 lakh eligible electors. In the previous Assembly elections, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) won 28 seats, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 25, the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) won 15, and the Congress won 12.
