Jammu and Kashmir Votes: 41.17% Turnout in First Phase of Elections

Jammu and Kashmir recorded a 41.17% voter turnout by 1 pm in the first phase of elections. According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), Kishtwar had the highest turnout at 56.86%, followed by Doda at 50.81%, Ramban at 49.68%, Kulgam at 39.91%, Shopian at 38.72%, Anantnag at 37.90%, and Pulwama at 29.84%.

Voting began at 7 am and will end at 6 pm. A brief protest in Kishtwar over voter identification was resolved, with Kishtwar DM Rajesh Kumar Shavan stating, “There was some confusion among people here, there was a crowd here and it has been resolved. There was some issue regarding identification, one person did not have an identity card. The situation is normal, voting has resumed.”

Kashmiri migrant voters also participated under high security at ITI College Campus in Jammu. BJP candidate from Ramban, Rakesh Thakur, expressed confidence in his party’s win, citing development after the abrogation of Article 370. Jammu & Kashmir National Conference candidate from Banihal, Sajad Shaheen, also expressed optimism, stating, “The atmosphere is very positive and the public wants to vote for the regional party Jammu & Kashmir National Conference so that their regional issues can be addressed…I am hopeful that we will win with a thumping majority.”

In the first phase, 24 assembly constituencies across the Union Territory are voting, including 16 seats in the Kashmir region and 8 seats in the Jammu region. The next voting phases are on September 25 and October 1, with results to be announced on October 8.
