Jammu and Kashmir Prepares for Assembly Elections with New BJP Committee

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has formed an election committee for the upcoming assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. This decision was made in consultation with party chief JP Nadda, Union Minister and J-K Election Incharge G Kishan Reddy, and Tarun Chugh, National General Secretary and J-K Prabhari.

  • Devinder Singh Rana, former MLA

Special invitees include Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy, Tarun Chugh, Ashish Sood, and Dr. Narinder Singh.

Election Schedule

The Chief Election Commissioner, Rajiv Kumar, announced that the assembly elections will be held in three phases:

  • First phase: September 18
  • Second phase: September 25
  • Third phase: October 1

Counting of votes will take place on October 4. The nomination dates are August 27 for the first phase, September 5 for the second phase, and September 12 for the third phase.

Voter Demographics

Jammu and Kashmir has a total of 87.09 lakh electors, including 44.46 lakh males, 42.62 lakh females, 169 transgender individuals, 82,590 PwDs, 73,943 very senior citizens, 2,660 centenarians, 76,092 service electors, and 3.71 lakh first-time voters.

Historical Context

This election marks the first in ten years, following the fall of the PDP-BJP coalition government in June 2018. The Supreme Court had directed the Centre to conclude the election process by September 30, 2024.

PDP-BJP coalition government -: This was a government formed by two parties, PDP and BJP, working together. It ended in 2018.
