The Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections, held after a decade, have concluded with exit polls suggesting a lead for the National Conference (NC) and Congress alliance. The assembly requires 46 seats for a majority in its 90-member house.

Exit Poll Predictions

According to TV-Today C-voter, the NC-Congress alliance is expected to secure 40-48 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) might win 27-32 seats. The People’s Democratic Party (PDP), led by former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, is projected to win 6-12 seats, with other parties gaining 6-11 seats.

Dainik Bhaskar’s projections suggest the NC-Congress could win 35-40 seats, BJP 20-25, PDP 4-7, and others 12-18. People Pulse predicts 46-50 seats for NC-Congress, 23-27 for BJP, 7-11 for PDP, and 4-6 for others. Gulistan News on Republic TV forecasts 28-30 seats for NC, 3-6 for Congress, 5-7 for PDP, and 8-16 for others.

Voter Turnout and Election Details

The Election Commission of India reported a 63.88% voter turnout. The third phase on October 1 saw a 69.69% turnout, with earlier phases recording 61.38% and 57.31%. These elections are the first since the abrogation of Article 370.

The NC and Congress, part of the INDIA alliance, contested together, while PDP and BJP ran separately. Key figures like Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and former Chief Ministers Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah, and Mehbooba Mufti campaigned extensively. Vote counting is scheduled for October 8.

In 2023, the Supreme Court instructed the Centre to conduct these elections by September 30, 2024.
