Successful Completion of Assembly Elections
The Election Commission of India has congratulated the people of Jammu and Kashmir for the successful completion of the recent Assembly elections. Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar praised the peaceful and participative electoral process, calling it a victory for democracy over despair. He highlighted the resilience and determination of the people of J&K, stating that their votes have strengthened democracy and paved the way for progress in the region.
Historic Voter Turnout
On September 30, Rajiv Kumar noted a significant increase in voter turnout, candidate participation, and election-related activities compared to previous elections. He emphasized that the final two phases of polling saw no boycotts or need for re-polling, marking a historic achievement.
Election Results
The Congress-National Conference alliance secured 49 out of 90 seats, crossing the halfway mark to form the government. The National Conference won 42 seats, the Indian National Congress 6, and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) 1 seat.
Significance of the Elections
These elections, held after a decade-long gap, took place in three phases on September 18, September 25, and October 1. It was the first Assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, which led to the bifurcation of the former state into the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
