The Jammu and Kashmir Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, has passed a resolution urging the Union Government to restore the statehood of the Union Territory. This decision was made during a meeting held at the Civil Secretariat in Srinagar.

Resolution Details

The resolution was passed unanimously, and Chief Minister Abdullah has been authorized to discuss the matter with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Government of India. An official spokesperson confirmed that Abdullah will travel to New Delhi soon to meet with the Prime Minister and Union Ministers.

Political Reactions

People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Waheed Parra expressed his views on social media, stating that the resolution is a ratification of the August 5th, 2019 decision, and criticized the lack of focus on Article 370.

Legislative Assembly Developments

The Cabinet has also decided to summon the Legislative Assembly in Srinagar on November 4. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has appointed Mubarak Gul, a senior National Conference leader, as the pro-tem speaker. Gul will administer the oath to the elected members on October 21.

Election Results

The recent assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the first since the abrogation of Article 370, saw the NC-Congress alliance winning. The National Conference secured 42 seats, while Congress won six.
