Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Debates Article 370 Resolution

The newly elected assembly of Jammu and Kashmir began its first session on Monday. A significant event was the introduction of a resolution by PDP leader Waheed Para, representing Pulwama, opposing the revocation of Article 370 and seeking to restore the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. This move led to a heated debate in the assembly, with the BJP demanding the resolution be dismissed.

PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti praised Waheed Para for his efforts, expressing her support on social media. However, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah criticized the resolution, suggesting it was merely for show and lacked genuine intent. He emphasized that if there was a real purpose, discussions should have been held with the National Conference.

The National Conference had promised the restoration of Article 370 and statehood in its election manifesto. A meeting was held by the National Conference and its allies, including Congress MLAs, to discuss the assembly session. The session will conclude on November 8, featuring the L-G’s address and tributes to former legislators.

In the last assembly election, the Congress-National Conference alliance secured 49 out of 90 seats, while the BJP won 29 seats. Omar Abdullah was sworn in as Chief Minister on September 16.
