Jamil Maqsood Criticizes PoJK’s Response to 2005 Earthquake

Jamil Maqsood, President of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the United Kashmir People’s National Party, has voiced concerns over the inadequate response to the 2005 earthquake in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.6, caused widespread destruction, particularly affecting schools and hospitals. Despite promises of reconstruction, many primary schools remain in disrepair, and healthcare facilities are still lacking. Maqsood criticized the PoJK government for failing to modernize educational infrastructure, leaving students in temporary shelters. He highlighted that over 6,000 schools were damaged, and many families had to rebuild homes themselves, often without meeting safety standards. The transportation network also suffered, isolating communities and hindering economic activities. Maqsood pointed out that the Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority’s promises remain unfulfilled due to funding issues and mismanagement. He warned that the lack of proper educational infrastructure threatens the future of the younger generation. Despite some support from international organizations, the region continues to face challenges due to neglect and governance issues.
