Jamaica’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness Visits India for the First Time
Jamaica’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness arrived in New Delhi, India, on Monday at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This marks his first-ever visit to India. Holness was warmly received by Minister of State for Finance, Pankaj Chaudhary.
Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, shared the update of his arrival, stating, “India-Jamaica: Creating new milestones PM @AndrewHolnessJM of Jamaica arrives in New Delhi today on his maiden visit to India. Warmly received by MoS @FinMinIndia @mppchaudhary.”
Holness is on an official visit to India from September 30 to October 3. This visit is also the first-ever bilateral visit of a Prime Minister of Jamaica to India. During his stay, Holness will hold delegation-level talks with Prime Minister Modi and call on President Droupadi Murmu and Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankar. He will also meet other dignitaries and interact with trade and industry leaders. Several MoUs are expected to be signed to boost bilateral cooperation.
India and Jamaica share strong historical and cultural ties, reflected in their shared colonial past, values of democracy and freedom, and passion for cricket. This visit is expected to strengthen bilateral relations, enhance economic cooperation, and solidify the longstanding bonds between Jamaica and India.
Earlier on June 5, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar thanked Jamaica’s counterpart Kamina Johnson Smith after she congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his third consecutive victory in the Lok Sabha elections. Jamaican PM Andrew Holness also congratulated PM Modi and expressed his eagerness to work together for the welfare of both countries.
