Jamaat-e-Islami’s Call for Peaceful Relations Between Bangladesh and India

Jamaat-e-Islami, the largest Islamic political party in Bangladesh, has stressed the need for Dhaka and New Delhi to work together peacefully. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, Deputy Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami, highlighted Bangladesh’s commitment to maintaining good relations with its neighbors, especially India.

In 2013, Jamaat-e-Islami was banned from elections by the Bangladesh High Commission, a decision upheld by the Supreme Court in 2023. On August 1, the party was banned by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who accused it of violent protests. However, the interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus lifted the ban.

Taher expressed support for a potential meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Muhammad Yunus in the United States, emphasizing sincerity in the discussions. He also called for the repatriation of Sheikh Hasina to face trial in Bangladesh.

Addressing allegations of violence against the Hindu minority during recent protests, Taher denied the claims, stating that Jamaat-e-Islami has always protected minorities and condemned communal violence.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized the importance of mutual interests in India-Bangladesh relations, acknowledging the impact of political changes.
