Shimla (Himachal Pradesh), September 12: Leader of Opposition in Himachal Pradesh Assembly, Jairam Thakur, called the protest against the alleged illegal construction of Sanjauli Mosque a “very unfortunate incident.” Thakur criticized the state government, stating that the current atmosphere in the state is a failure of the government.

Thakur said, “Himachal has been a peaceful state…After whatever happened in Shimla, I’ve never seen such an atmosphere in the state. This has been a failure of the government…The way the government has tried to suppress the entire matter, there has been anger among the people of the state.” He added that water cannons and lathi charges were used, resulting in many injuries.

Regarding the financial crisis in the state, Thakur mentioned that for the first time in Himachal Pradesh’s history, government employees did not receive their salaries on time, and pensioners did not get their pensions. He attributed this to the state’s economic crisis.

Meanwhile, following the protests, members of the Muslim committee met Municipal Commissioner Bhupender Kumar Attri and offered to demolish the concerned part of the mosque themselves if the court orders so. Shaizad Alam, Imam of Sanjauli Mosque, emphasized the importance of maintaining harmony and stated that they are not acting under any pressure but to preserve peace.

Mufti Mohammed Shafi Kasmi, Imam of Jama Masjid Mosque, also stressed the need for brotherhood between communities and expressed readiness to remove the illegal portion of the mosque if required.

Municipal Commissioner Attri confirmed that the mosque’s representatives requested peace and harmony and are willing to comply with any court judgment regarding the illegal construction.

Earlier, police used water cannons and lathi charges to disperse protestors who clashed with security forces during a protest march against the alleged illegal construction of the Sanjauli Mosque.
