Jairam Ramesh Urges Government to Conduct Delayed 2021 Census and Include Caste Data
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh has criticized the delay in conducting the 2021 Census, stating that it is essential for economic planning and social justice programs. The last Census was conducted in 2011, and the delay has resulted in the lack of vital information.
Ramesh suggested that the government could easily collect caste-wise data on the OBC population in the next Census by adding an extra column. He noted that every Census since 1951 has collected data on scheduled castes and tribes.
He pointed out that the delay has denied benefits to over 12 crore Indians under the National Food Security Act, 2013, and the PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana. Ramesh emphasized that conducting the Census is the Union Government’s responsibility, as per the Constitution of India.
The Congress party has promised to conduct a nationwide Socio-Economic and Caste Census and to pass a constitutional amendment to raise the reservation cap for SC, ST, and OBC categories, as part of its 2024 general election manifesto.
