Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh emphasized the significant role played by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, in the establishment of the Republic of Austria. This comes as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Austria.

Ramesh noted that Austria became a fully established republic on October 26, 1955, a day celebrated as its National Day. He mentioned that Dr. Hans Kochler, an Austrian academic, has written about Nehru’s key role in Austria’s emergence as a sovereign and neutral state after World War II.

Ramesh also highlighted the admiration of Nehru by Dr. Bruno Kreisky, who served as Austria’s Chancellor from 1970 to 1983. Kreisky once said, “When the history of this century is written, and that of the men who have put their stamp on it, one of the greatest and finest chapters will be the story of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.”

PM Modi’s visit to Austria is historic, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 41 years. Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer expressed his excitement about the visit, noting it as a significant milestone in the 75 years of diplomatic relations between India and Austria.
