Jairam Ramesh Criticizes PM Modi’s Absence in Manipur Amid BRICS Summit in Russia

On October 21, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not visiting Manipur, where ethnic violence has been ongoing since last year. Instead, PM Modi is set to attend the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, on October 22-23. Ramesh highlighted the history of the BRICS Summit, noting its origins in 2009 under the Congress-led UPA government. He mentioned that the term BRIC was first coined in 2001 by British economist Jim O’Neill, and the first BRIC Summit took place in 2009 in Russia. South Africa joined in 2011, making it BRICS. Ramesh pointed out that India hosted the BRICS Summit in 2012 and that the group now includes Egypt, Iran, UAE, and Ethiopia. He expressed disappointment that while the BRICS Summit progresses, Manipur still awaits attention. The Summit, themed ‘Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security,’ will allow leaders to discuss global issues and assess BRICS initiatives. PM Modi is expected to hold bilateral meetings with BRICS leaders during his visit.
