Jagmeet Singh Urges Action Against India Amid Canada-India Tensions

In Toronto, tensions between India and Canada have escalated following the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Jagmeet Singh, leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP) and former ally of Prime Minister Trudeau, has called for diplomatic sanctions against India. Singh expressed concern for Canadian Sikhs, stating they are living in fear due to threats and harassment allegedly linked to Indian officials.

Singh supported the expulsion of Indian diplomats and urged the Canadian government to ban the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) network in Canada. He emphasized the need for severe consequences for those involved in criminal activities on Canadian soil. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) recently released a statement highlighting violent criminal activities in Canada with ties to Indian government agents.

Singh alleged that Canada has credible evidence linking Indian officials to Nijjar’s murder and criticized the need to fight for the inclusion of potential subversive activities by India in foreign interference inquiries. He noted that since September 2023, at least 13 individuals have been warned of serious threats against them.

Melanie Joly, Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced the expulsion of six Indian diplomats, citing a targeted campaign against Canadian citizens. Joly urged India to support the ongoing investigation into Nijjar’s case.

In response, India expelled six Canadian diplomats, accusing Canada of harboring extremists and terrorists. The diplomatic rift follows Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations of India’s involvement in Nijjar’s killing, which India has denied.
