Israel’s Sharon Region Strengthens Security Amid Daily Threats

Communities in Israel’s Sharon region are enhancing their local security teams due to daily Palestinian shooting attacks and infiltrations. Shimon Tzaraf, head of Moshav Nitzanei Oz’s security committee, highlights the need for training and preparedness. Residents like Nir Bazak from Sha’ar Efraim stress the importance of local defense systems. Despite government funding, local leaders rely on donations to fill gaps. The region faces increased threats, necessitating robust security measures.

Increased Training and Preparedness

Shimon Tzaraf explained that the local security teams, known as kitot konenut, have reached a level of fitness and skill comparable to special units. These teams are trained in basic military and first aid skills and are equipped with defensive gear and weapons to handle threats until official security forces arrive.

Community Efforts and Challenges

Since October 7, communities have organized efforts to build security systems from scratch, including cameras, a command center, and patrols. Nir Bazak from Sha’ar Efraim emphasized the need for local defense due to the proximity of threats and the potential for riots in nearby areas.

Support and Donations

Local leaders rely on donations to fill gaps in security measures. Two American nonprofits, Israel Friends and Civil Squads of Israel (CSI), along with the World Zionist Organization, delivered hundreds of protective ceramic vests to the Sharon Regional Council on July 4.

Ongoing Threats

Residents are aware of the frequent Israeli counterterror operations targeting Tulkarem. Since October 7, approximately 4,150 Palestinian terror suspects have been arrested in counterterror raids throughout Judea and Samaria, with 40 percent associated with Hamas.

Future Concerns

Despite the efforts, Shimon Tzaraf expressed concerns about the sustainability of the volunteer-based security system. He acknowledged that the fear and desire to protect families drive the volunteers, but long-term sustainability remains uncertain.
