Israel’s Inter-ministerial tender committee for solar energy projects has announced that EDF Renewables won the tender to build a new solar power plant in Ashalim, a small town in the Negev. This plant will use photovoltaic technology to produce around 100 megawatts of electricity at a record low cost of less than 7 shekels per kWh.

The facility will cover more than 220 acres and will join other renewable energy projects in the area. These projects include two thermo-solar power plants and two photovoltaic power plants, which are already supplying over 300 megawatts to Israel’s electricity grid.

Once completed, the new plant by EDF Renewables will help the five projects in Ashalim collectively provide over 400 megawatts of renewable energy. This will support the electricity sector’s production needs and contribute to Israel’s national goals for renewable energy.
