Israel’s Evacuation Plan Dispute: Comptroller Matanyahu Englman Warns of Unpreparedness Amid Hezbollah Threat
State Comptroller Matanyahu Englman has raised concerns about Israel’s readiness to evacuate residents in the north if the conflict with Hezbollah worsens. The Defence and Interior ministries are in disagreement over who is responsible for the evacuation process.
Disagreement Between Ministries
Interior Minister Moshe Arbel believes his ministry should only evacuate residents to local schools when ordered by the government, while Defence Minister Yoav Gallant argues that the Interior Ministry is responsible for all evacuees, regardless of the circumstances.
Comptroller’s Warning
Englman emphasized the importance of resolving this issue to ensure proper treatment of the evacuated population. He highlighted the ongoing threat from Hezbollah, which has intensified its attacks since June.
Hezbollah’s Impact
Since October 7, Hezbollah’s rocket and drone attacks have resulted in the deaths of 10 civilians and 15 soldiers. The group aims to prevent northern Israeli residents from returning to their homes. Israeli officials are calling for Hezbollah’s disarmament in line with UN Security Council resolution 1701.
Rising Tensions
As rhetoric between Israeli and Hezbollah leaders escalates, Defence Minister Gallant warned that Israel could send Lebanon ‘back to the Stone Age’ if necessary.
