Israeli Raids in West Bank: Top Islamic Jihad Commander Killed Amid Rising Tensions

On Thursday, Israel continued its military operations in the West Bank, resulting in the death of five militants, including Mohamed Jaber, a top commander of Islamic Jihad. This marked the second day of one of the largest operations in the territory in recent years.

Hundreds of Israeli troops conducted raids in several areas of the northern West Bank, including Jenin and Tulkarm, engaging in gun battles and making mass arrests. The Israel Defense Forces stated that the operation was necessary to prevent terrorist attacks on Israelis. However, Palestinians expressed concerns that the incursion could lead to more violence and hinder access to healthcare and other essential services.

Mohamed Jaber, also known as Abu Shuja’a, was killed inside a mosque in Tulkarm after an exchange of fire with Israeli troops. Jaber was a key figure in the Palestinian Islamic Jihad and was wanted for his involvement in attacks, including a shooting that killed an Israeli civilian in June.

The Tulkarm branch of Palestinian Islamic Jihad confirmed Jaber’s death, calling it the ‘assassination of our leader.’ In response, the group claimed to have detonated an explosive device and fired at an Israeli infantry unit.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed deep concerns about the raids and called for an immediate cessation. He emphasized the need for injured individuals to have access to medical care and for humanitarian workers to reach those in need.

Meanwhile, the Biden administration sanctioned an Israeli NGO, Hashomer Yosh, and three of its members. The group is partially funded by the Israeli government and is linked to far-right ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich. Israel has objected to the sanctions, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office stating that the issue will be discussed with the US.
