Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu Speaks to US Congress Amid Protests

On Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed a joint meeting of Congress in Washington, DC. His speech was met with significant protests, as over 5,000 people gathered near Capitol Hill, waving Palestinian flags and calling for the US to stop arming Israel.

During his address, Netanyahu urged American leaders to provide bipartisan support to Israel amid its ongoing conflict with Hamas in Gaza. He criticized Iran for funding anti-Israel protests in America and called the protesters ‘Iran useful idiots.’ Netanyahu emphasized the strategic role of Israel in countering Iran, stating, ‘Our enemies are your enemies. Our fight is your fight, and our victory will be your victory.’

Netanyahu did not mention a ceasefire or the status of negotiations with Hamas but stated that the war could end if Hamas surrendered its arms and returned hostages. He compared the Hamas terror attack in October to the attacks on Pearl Harbor and 9/11, calling it ‘a day that will forever live in infamy.’

The Israeli Prime Minister praised US President Joe Biden for his efforts to free hostages held by Hamas and thanked him for decades of friendship with Israel. Netanyahu also expressed gratitude to former US President Donald Trump for his support and mentioned his relief that Trump was safe after a shooting in Pennsylvania.

More than 30 members of Congress boycotted Netanyahu’s address in protest of his approach to the Israel-Hamas war. Elon Musk attended the address as one of Netanyahu’s special guests.
