Israel Supports UAE’s Plan for Salam Fayyad to Lead Gaza

Israeli officials are supporting a proposal from the United Arab Emirates to appoint former Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad as the head of a new Palestinian Authority in Gaza. This plan, which is also backed by the United States, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, aims to create a reformed administration that operates independently of Mahmoud Abbas.

Representatives from the US, Israel, and UAE met to discuss Gaza’s post-war governance, focusing on the Emirati proposal. Fayyad, an economist and critic of Abbas, is seen as a suitable leader for this new administration.

The plan also includes the presence of Arab and foreign forces to maintain public order in Gaza, with potential participation from Egypt, Morocco, and Qatar. Israeli officials have welcomed this approach, emphasizing the importance of a moderate Arab coalition.

In a related move, Israel approved the transfer of 250 wounded and sick Gaza residents to the UAE for medical treatment. The Emirates has been actively providing humanitarian aid to Gaza, including building hospitals and supplying food and medical supplies.

At least 1,200 people were killed, and 252 Israelis and foreigners were taken hostage in Hamas’s attacks on October 7. Of the 115 remaining hostages, 39 have been declared dead. Hamas has also been holding two Israeli civilians and the bodies of two soldiers since 2014 and 2015.
