Israel Strikes Hamas in UN School in Gaza’s Nuseirat

On July 17, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) struck Hamas terrorists operating in a United Nations school in Nuseirat, Gaza. This marks the second attack on terrorists in a UNRWA facility in Nuseirat this week. According to the IDF, Hamas used the school to plan and direct attacks on Israeli soldiers.

The IDF stated, “The Hamas terrorist organization systematically violates international law, exploiting civilian structures and population as human shields for its terror attacks against the State of Israel.” Steps were taken to minimize civilian harm, including the use of precise munitions and other intelligence measures.

On Sunday, Israeli aircraft targeted Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorists in the UNRWA-run Abu Oraiban School in Nuseirat. They had used the school as a hideout and launching point for attacks against Israeli troops.

UN schools in Gaza are operated by the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which supports Palestinian refugees. Israeli officials have criticized UNRWA for alleged ties to Hamas and are pushing to defund and close the agency. The Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee recently advanced legislation to designate UNRWA as a “terror organization,” stripping it of diplomatic immunity and other legal benefits.

In February, Israel’s largest bank froze UNRWA’s account over suspicious financial transfers. That same month, Israeli forces discovered a Hamas complex under UNRWA’s Gaza City headquarters, connected to the agency’s electricity system and housing numerous computer servers.

More than 100 survivors of Hamas’s October 7 attacks have filed a $1 billion lawsuit against UNRWA, accusing the agency of “aiding and abetting” the terror group. Israeli officials are calling for UNRWA to be closed and for Palestinian refugees to be brought under the responsibility of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Hamas’s October 7 attacks resulted in over 1,200 deaths and 252 hostages, with more than 30 of the 116 remaining hostages believed dead.
