Israel Plans New Urban District in Sderot with 5,000 Homes

Israel’s Ministry of Construction and Housing has announced a plan to build a new urban district near the train station in Sderot, a city located just north of Gaza. This city was one of the targets during the October 7 attack.

The project includes:

  • 5,000 new housing units, including apartments for students
  • About 370,000 square meters for commerce and employment
  • About 350,000 square meters for public buildings
  • About 40 acres of open spaces

The plan aims to make the area around the train station a central and significant focal point by adding residential, employment, and commercial areas. It also emphasizes high-quality public spaces to encourage walking and community activities along the main streets.

The new urban fabric will connect Sapir College to the south with the train station to the north and include an interchange at the main entrance to the city. The project also includes high-quality open spaces like a river park and other public areas accessible to pedestrians and cyclists. Existing forests in the area will be preserved for the well-being of residents.

Yehuda Morgenstern, CEO of the Ministry of Construction and Housing, said, “The expansion of the city of Sderot and the construction of 5,000 housing units is great news for the city, the south, and the entire State of Israel. In recent years, Sderot has demonstrated significant development momentum and demographic growth.”
