Israel Bans UN Chief Antonio Guterres Over Iran Attack Stance
Tel Aviv, Israel – Israel’s Foreign Minister, Israel Katz, announced that United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has been declared persona non grata and banned from entering Israel. Katz stated that Guterres failed to condemn Iran’s attack on Israel and the atrocities committed by Hamas on October 7.
In a post on X, Katz said, ‘Today, I have declared UN Secretary-General @antonioguterres persona non grata in Israel and banned him from entering the country. Anyone who cannot unequivocally condemn Iran’s heinous attack on Israel, as almost every country in the world has done, does not deserve to step foot on Israeli soil.’
Katz criticized Guterres for not denouncing the massacre and sexual atrocities committed by Hamas and for not leading efforts to declare them a terrorist organization. He accused Guterres of supporting terrorists from Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, and Iran.
Alex Gandler, deputy spokesperson for the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs, echoed Katz’s sentiments, stating that Guterres has not been helpful during Israel’s conflict with Iran, Hamas, and Hezbollah. Gandler accused Guterres of siding with these groups instead of condemning their actions.
Earlier, Guterres had called for a ceasefire in response to Iran’s rocket barrage on Israel, condemning the escalation of the Middle East conflict.
The situation in West Asia intensified after Iran launched nearly 200 ballistic missiles towards Israel. The United States military coordinated with the Israeli Defence Forces to defend against the attack. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Iran’s missile attack a ‘big mistake’ and vowed that Tehran would pay for it.
Israeli Defence Forces spokesperson, RAdm. Daniel Hagari, described Iran’s attack as a ‘severe and dangerous escalation’ and warned of consequences. Chief of the General Staff, LTG Herzi Halevi, discussed the situation with Centcom Commander General Michael Erik Kurilla.
