Islamabad High Court Orders Release of PTI Activist Sanam Javed

The Islamabad High Court has ordered the immediate release of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) activist Sanam Javed and barred the police from arresting her until Thursday. Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb stated that the order might be reversed if Javed engages in unnecessary rhetoric.

Sanam Javed had been incarcerated since May 9 last year in connection with 12 cases. She was arrested by the Federal Investigation Agency on July 10, soon after being discharged by the Lahore High Court in a case related to the May 9 riots.

In a related development, an Anti-Terrorism Court in Lahore granted a 10-day physical remand of PTI founder Imran Khan. The unrest erupted nationwide last year after Khan was detained by paramilitary Rangers during a corruption case proceeding. The protests led to widespread rioting and vandalism, including attacks on the Lahore Corps Commander’s residence and the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi.

Lahore police’s investigation team visited Adiala Jail to question Imran Khan, but he declined to meet with them. Khan is the primary suspect in 12 cases registered at different police stations in Lahore, with charges ranging from provoking public unrest to attacks on government properties and military installations.
