Iran’s Hassan Kazemi Qomi Voices Concerns at Doha Meeting on Afghanistan

Doha, Qatar – Iranian Ambassador to Afghanistan, Hassan Kazemi Qomi, attended the Doha meeting to express Tehran’s concerns about Afghanistan. He emphasized the need for comprehensive negotiations to address the complex situation in the region.

Qomi stated that he participated in the third Doha meeting to clarify Tehran’s concerns and explain Iran’s humanitarian policies toward Afghanistan to UN officials and participating nations. He expressed hope that the talks would alleviate the suffering of Afghanistan’s people and bring about peace, stability, and sustainable development.

The first day of the Doha meeting was held on Sunday, with discussions on financial and banking sanctions, the private sector, drug trafficking, and the preservation of progress. Representatives from over 20 countries and several international organizations attended, including a delegation from the Taliban.

Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, mentioned that the Taliban-led government would engage in talks with special representatives from various countries and institutions. However, Afghan civil society and women representatives were absent, sparking widespread criticism.

The Taliban has not been internationally recognized since seizing power in August 2021. Since their return, most girls have been barred from high school and women from universities.
