Iran’s Concerns Over Unrest in Bangladesh and Sheikh Hasina’s Resignation
New Delhi, India – Amid ongoing unrest in Bangladesh, Iran’s Ambassador to India, Iraj Elahi, expressed concerns about the situation in Bangladesh. He emphasized that the lack of peace and stability in Bangladesh could affect the entire region. Iran shares traditional relations with Bangladesh, and the recent events have raised worries about the lives of the people there.
In an interview, Ambassador Elahi said, “Bangladesh is an important country in the region. It is a big Muslim country. Iran has traditional relations with Bangladesh. What happened in Bangladesh has raised our concerns about the lives of people, this country’s stability and the region’s stability.” He expressed hope that normalcy would return soon to the violence-hit country.
Since last month, protests against a government job quota turned fatal, leading to more than 2,000 people being jailed. The demonstrations quickly escalated into a nationwide campaign for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation. On Monday, General Waker-Uz-Zaman announced that an interim government would be formed and promised justice for the deaths during the protests. He assured the public to have faith in the army and took full responsibility for the situation.
The military announced that the curfew would be lifted on Tuesday at dawn, and businesses, schools, and institutions would reopen. People celebrated in the streets of Chittagong after reports surfaced that Sheikh Hasina had left Bangladesh. A joyous procession spread through various parts of the city.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned amid the mounting protests and arrived in India on Monday evening. It is unclear if she will stay in Delhi or move to another location. Meanwhile, in Dhaka, leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement proposed an interim government led by Nobel Laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus to address the ongoing challenges. President Mohammed Shahabuddin approved the formation of an interim government on Monday night.
