Iran Vows to Punish Israel Over Hamas Leader’s Assassination

Tehran [Iran], August 26: An Iranian minister has promised to take action against Israel for the assassination of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last month. Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi, during a phone call with his Italian counterpart Antonio Tajani, stated that Iran’s response to the Israeli attack would be ‘definitive and calculated’.

Araghchi also mentioned on social media that while Iran does not seek escalation, it is not afraid of it, unlike Israel. Tajani expressed concern over the growing insecurity in the region and urged all parties to practice self-restraint and for Iran to help reduce tensions.

On August 25, the Israel Defence Forces reported that Hezbollah, a group backed by Iran, fired over 200 rockets and drones at Israel’s northern border in retaliation for the assassination of its senior commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut. Israel responded by bombing sites across South Lebanon, claiming to have destroyed around 1,000 Hezbollah rocket launchers with a coordinated attack involving 100 fighter jets.

Meanwhile, senior Israeli negotiators are heading to Cairo to resume talks aimed at finalizing a hostage release and truce deal in Gaza. The ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas are being mediated by the US, Egypt, and Qatar.

Hamas and Iran have blamed Israel for Haniyeh’s killing in Tehran on July 31, although the Israeli government has not commented on the incident. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed that Haniyeh and his bodyguard were killed in an attack on their house in Tehran. Additionally, the IDF announced that top Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr was killed in an Israeli strike in southern Lebanon on July 30, following a rocket attack at Golan Heights that killed 12 children.
