Iran Denies Involvement in Hamas Leader Ismail Haniyeh’s Assassination

Tehran [Iran], August 5: Iranian officials have denied reports that their special services were involved in the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. The Iranian Army and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated that the killing was not due to infiltration by Iranian agents.

According to Ebrahim Rezaei, a deputy of the IRGC Quds Force and spokesman for the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, the assassination was not the result of infiltration. Rezaei made these comments following a meeting with officials from Iran’s intelligence ministry and the IRGC.

The New York Times reported that an explosive device was smuggled into a Tehran guesthouse where Haniyeh was staying, leading to his death. Haniyeh was in Tehran for the inauguration of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian when the bomb was detonated remotely.

Iran blames Israel for the attack and plans to take revenge. The IRGC accused Israel of using a short-range projectile with a warhead and also blamed the United States for supporting the attack. Israel has neither confirmed nor denied its involvement.
