Tehran, Iran – Iran has responded angrily to the killing of Ismail Haniyeh, the political bureau chief of Hamas, in Tehran. Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that Tehran will defend its territorial integrity and dignity, and emphasized that the bond between Iran and Palestine will be stronger than before.

Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s President when he was killed in an attack. President Pezeshkian expressed his sorrow, calling Haniyeh a brave leader of the Palestinian resistance and a martyr. He vowed that Iran would defend its honour and make the attackers regret their actions.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Seyyed Ali Hosseini Khamenei and the Iranian Foreign Ministry also offered condolences, with the latter stating that Haniyeh’s sacrifices would not be wasted. The Iranian authorities are investigating the targeted killing.

Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the killing, calling it a heinous crime and a violation of international law. They warned that such actions could lead to regional chaos and undermine peace efforts.

Turkey’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also condemned the attack, accusing the Israeli government of lacking the intention to achieve peace and warning of greater regional conflict if the international community does not act.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov denounced the killing as an unacceptable political murder that would escalate tensions and negatively affect ceasefire talks.

Hamas has vowed to take revenge, blaming Israel for Haniyeh’s death. Other Palestinian groups, including the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), condemned the killing and promised retaliation.
