INSIGHT UK Challenges Oxford Union Debate on Kashmir Independence

A social movement called INSIGHT UK, representing British Hindus and Indians, has raised concerns about an upcoming debate at the Oxford Union Society. The debate, titled “This House Believes in the Independent State of Kashmir,” has sparked controversy due to the inclusion of speakers with alleged ties to terrorism.

Concerns Over Speakers

INSIGHT UK sent a formal letter to the Oxford Union, highlighting issues with two invited speakers, Muzzammil Ayyub Thakur and Zafar Khan. Thakur, president of the World Kashmir Freedom Movement and co-founder of Mercy Universal, has been accused of incitement and hate speech. His organizations have been investigated by Scotland Yard, the Charity Commission, and the FBI for suspected terrorist connections.

Zafar Khan, Chairman of the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), is linked to a group known for violent activities against the Kashmiri Hindu community. The JKLF was involved in the 1984 kidnapping and murder of Indian diplomat Ravindra Mhatre in the UK.

Call for Reconsideration

INSIGHT UK argues that the debate undermines sovereignty and territorial integrity, potentially endorsing violence and terrorism. They urge the Oxford Union to reconsider hosting the debate and providing a platform for individuals with alleged extremist links.

The organization emphasizes that academic platforms should promote peace and constructive dialogue, not extremist ideologies. They call for the Oxford Union to uphold these values and reconsider the debate and its speakers.
