Inquiry Ordered into Shooting of Two Suspected Poachers in Assam’s Laokhowa Wildlife Sanctuary

The Nagaon District Magistrate in Assam has issued an order to investigate the shooting of two suspected poachers, Samar Uddin (30) and Abdul Jalil (35), by forest officials in Laokhowa Wildlife Sanctuary. The incident took place near Rowmari Beel under Gorajan Range, within the jurisdiction of Juria Police Station.

The shooting occurred during a confrontation between forest patrolling parties and a group of armed intruders. The forest officials opened fire in self-defense when the intruders attacked with sharp weapons. The two individuals were taken to Nagaon Civil Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has directed the Chief Secretary to immediately constitute an inquiry into the incident. The inquiry will be led by Sudeep Nath, ACS, Addl. District Magistrate, Nagaon, and is expected to be completed within 10 days.

Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve Director Sonali Ghosh stated that the area has a history of rhino poaching and illegal activities. The forest department has strengthened its boundaries and maintained a strong vigil, leading to the migration of rhinos from Orang Tiger Reserve to the Roumari landscape.

The police and forest department staff are currently camping at the site to maintain law and order.
