India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has expanded to Paris, with the flagship store of Galeries Lafayette on Haussmann Boulevard now accepting UPI payments. This move aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of globalizing UPI, an instant payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) in 2016.

On July 3, 2024, UPI went live at Galeries Lafayette, following its successful launch at the Eiffel Tower. The launch event was attended by Indian Ambassador to France Jawed Ashraf, Galeries Lafayette CEO Nicolas Houze, and Lyra Group Chairman Alain Lacour.

Ambassador Ashraf highlighted the success of UPI’s international journey, recalling its first launch in Singapore in 2018 by Prime Minister Modi. He expressed hope that UPI will grow as a medium for cross-border remittances and become a global digital payment system.

This initiative aims to facilitate seamless transactions for Indian visitors during the 2024 Paris Olympics, starting July 26, 2024, and underscores UPI’s evolving role as a global digital payment solution.
