India’s Response to Unrest in Bangladesh: Ensuring Safety of Indian Nationals
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar briefed the Parliament about the political unrest in Bangladesh. He assured that the government is in close contact with the Indian community in Dhaka, which includes an estimated 19,000 Indian nationals, of which about 9,000 are students.
Jaishankar stated, “We are in close and continuous touch with the Indian community in Bangladesh through our diplomatic missions. The bulk of the students returned in July.”
Congress MP KC Venugopal expressed concern, saying, “Everybody is worried about the situation in Bangladesh and how it will affect Indians living there. We are waiting for the government’s proactive action.”
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi praised Jaishankar’s mature statement, emphasizing the need for normalcy in Bangladesh and the safe return of Indians.
Deputy Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, called for regular all-party meetings to keep leaders informed and ensure alertness in bordering states.
BJD MP Sasmit Patra and BJP leaders Suvendu Adhikari, Dinesh Sharma, and Raju Bista expressed their support for the government’s efforts and highlighted the importance of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in light of the situation.
Gujarat Education Minister Praful Pansheriya confirmed the safety of 20 Bangladeshi students studying at Gujarat University.
Yog Guru Baba Ramdev called for unity and protection of Hindus in Bangladesh, warning against the dangers of expanding Islamic radicalism.
NCP (SCP) leader Clyde Crasto urged the central government to ensure the safe return of Indian students from Bangladesh.
Union Minister of State for Railways and Food Processing expressed concern over attacks on religious places in Bangladesh and sought protection for Sikh Gurdwaras and Hindu temples.
Jaishankar informed that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina requested urgent clearance to come to India. He emphasized that the situation in Bangladesh is still evolving and that border forces have been instructed to remain exceptionally alert.
