India’s New Sports Policy and Bill Announced by Minister Mansukh Mandaviya

Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, has announced significant reforms in India’s sports sector. Speaking in New Delhi, Mandaviya introduced a new sports policy and a Sports Bill aimed at transforming sports governance as part of India’s goal to become a developed nation by 2047.

Key Features of the Sports Bill

The Draft National Sports Governance Bill 2024 has been released, inviting public comments until October 25. The Bill proposes a Sports Regulatory Board of India to oversee National Sports Federations (NSFs) and ensure compliance with governance, financial, and ethical standards.

Athlete Representation and Safety

Athlete representation is a key aspect, with 10% of voting members in major sports bodies being sportspersons of outstanding merit. The Bill also introduces a “Safe Sports Policy” to protect athletes from harassment, aligning with the POSH Act of 2013.

Governance and Dispute Resolution

The Bill mandates the creation of Ethics Commissions and Dispute Resolution Commissions to ensure transparency. An Appellate Sports Tribunal will expedite sports-related disputes, reducing reliance on civil courts.

The Ministry encourages public and stakeholder feedback on the Bill to refine and enhance its provisions.
