India’s New Quantum Labs Initiative: Boosting Technology and Research

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has announced a call for proposals under the ‘Quantum Standardisation and Testing Labs’ initiative. This initiative invites submissions from Indian academic and R&D institutions to propel research and development in quantum technologies.

These labs will bring together quantum technology developers, testing equipment manufacturers, and academic researchers to utilize the potential of quantum technologies. Quantum technology can be used in various sectors including pharmaceuticals, energy, finance, transport, defense, communications, and health. It uses subatomic particles to improve our everyday lives, leading to developments like lasers, LEDs, transistors, and medical imaging.

The deadline for proposal submissions is August 5, 2024. This initiative aligns with PM Modi’s vision for ‘Jai Anushandhan’ and aims to enhance lives by supporting the development of telecom products and technologies. The government approved the National Quantum Mission (NQM) on April 19, 2023, with a total outlay of Rs. 6003.65 Crore for eight years. The mission aims to support scientific and industrial R&D and create an innovative ecosystem in Quantum Technology (QT).

The proposed labs will set benchmarks for integrating quantum communication elements into existing and future networks and develop testing facilities to validate quantum concepts and devices. This ensures compliance with national and international standards. The labs will make advanced quantum technologies accessible to industry stakeholders, startups, and local telecom entities at a nominal fee. Technologies for testing include single photon and entangled photon sources, single-photon detectors, quantum memories and repeaters, quantum communication modules, trusted and untrusted nodes, and other relevant items.
