India’s Men’s and Women’s Teams Win Double Gold at Chess Olympiad

Indian men’s and women’s chess teams made history by winning gold medals at the recently-concluded Chess Olympiad. This is the first time India has secured gold in both categories in the same edition of the competition.

Garry Kasparov’s Praise

Russian chess icon and former world champion Garry Kasparov lauded the achievement, referring to the new generation of Indian chess players as ‘Vishy’s children,’ a nod to the legendary Viswanathan Anand.

Men’s Team Victory

India’s men’s team, consisting of D Gukesh, R Praggnanandhaa, Arjun Erigaisi, Vidit Gujrathi, and Pentala Harikrishna, defeated Slovenia to clinch the gold medal. Key wins from D Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi secured a 2-0 lead, with Praggnanandhaa also winning his game and Vidit drawing his match. India won 3.5-0.5.

Women’s Team Triumph

The Indian women’s team, featuring Harika Dronavalli, R Vaishali, Divya Deshmukh, Vantika Agarwal, and Tania Sachdev, also won gold by beating Azerbaijan 3.5-0.5. Harika Dronavalli, Divya Deshmukh, and Vantika Agrawal won their matches, while R Vaishali drew her game.

Other Podium Finishes

USA secured the second spot in the men’s competition and a bronze in the women’s competition. Uzbekistan won the bronze in the men’s competition, while Kazakhstan got silver in the women’s competition.
