External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Heads of State Summit in Astana, Kazakhstan. The discussions focused on resolving border disputes between India and China along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh.

Jaishankar highlighted the importance of mutual respect, sensitivity, and interest in guiding India-China relations. He stated, “Respecting the LAC and ensuring peace and tranquility in the border areas is essential. The three mutuals – mutual respect, mutual sensitivity, and mutual interest – will guide our bilateral ties.”

Both sides agreed to redouble efforts through diplomatic and military channels to resolve remaining issues. They also agreed to hold a new round of talks on the border issues at an early date.

China is set to take over the rotating presidency of the SCO, and Jaishankar expressed India’s support for China in this role. He emphasized India’s commitment to an independent foreign policy, multilateralism, and safeguarding the interests of developing countries.

Chinese Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, echoed the sentiment, calling for mutual respect and cooperation between the two nations. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also highlighted the importance of global solidarity and the SCO’s role as a crucial partner of the United Nations.
