India’s Health Ministry Replaces British-Era Convocation Attire with Traditional Indian Dress
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in India has announced a significant change in the attire worn during convocation ceremonies. The traditional black robe and cap, introduced by the British during colonial times, will be replaced.
Inspired by ‘Panch Pran’
This decision is influenced by the ‘Panch Pran’ (five resolutions) outlined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Ministry aims to modernize ceremonial attire to better reflect India’s rich cultural heritage.
New Dress Code Requirements
The Ministry has directed medical institutions to design new dress codes for their convocation ceremonies that honor local traditions. Institutions like AIIMS and other medical education institutes must submit their proposals for the new attire to the Ministry for approval by the Secretary (Health).
The Ministry’s official order states, “It has been observed that various institutes under the Ministry currently use the black robe and cap during convocation ceremonies. This attire, which originated in mediaeval Europe, was introduced by the British in all their colonies. This tradition, being a colonial legacy, needs to be changed.”
Institutions are now required to submit their proposals for new attire to the Ministry, through their respective divisions, for approval by the Secretary (Health).
