India Celebrates Micronesia’s Independence Day

On November 3, India’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, extended warm greetings to the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) on their Independence Day. He conveyed his message to Secretary of Foreign Affairs Lorin S Robert and the people of FSM, highlighting India’s supportive ties with the nation.

Jaishankar shared a video animation saying “Happy Independence Day Micronesia” to mark the occasion. FSM celebrates its 38th year of independence, having established diplomatic relations with India in 1996. These relations have strengthened through forums like the Forum of India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC).

FSM actively participates in FIPIC, with Vice President Yosiwo P George attending the second summit in Jaipur in 2015. India’s commitment to FSM was further demonstrated when Prime Minister Narendra Modi met FSM President David Panuelo at the United Nations General Assembly in 2019.

During this meeting, PM Modi announced a USD 12 million grant for Pacific Island Developing States (PSIDS), with USD 1 million allocated per country for developmental projects. Additionally, a USD 150 million Line of Credit was established for solar and renewable energy projects.

PM Modi also invited PSIDS leaders to join the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI), showcasing India’s dedication to sustainable growth and disaster preparedness in the Pacific region. India’s engagement with FSM and other Pacific Island nations underscores a strong partnership focused on sustainable development and mutual cooperation.
