India’s Domestic Airlines See Growth in Passengers in 2024: DGCA Report

In the first half of 2024, domestic airlines in India carried 793.48 lakh passengers, marking a 4.28% increase from the same period in the previous year. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) reported that 15.2 crore passengers flew in 2023, up from 12.32 crore in 2022, showing an annual growth of 23.36%.

The DGCA also noted that the overall cancellation rate for scheduled domestic airlines in May 2024 was 1.70%. The primary reason for cancellations was weather, accounting for 39.6%, followed by operational reasons at 23%, miscellaneous reasons at 19.5%, technical issues at 16.4%, and commercial reasons at 1.3%.

In May 2024, there were 723 passenger-related complaints, averaging around 0.52 complaints per 10,000 passengers. This increase in passenger numbers highlights the growing demand for air travel and the positive trajectory of the aviation sector.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation, an office under the Ministry of Civil Aviation, is responsible for regulating air transport services within India and ensuring air safety and airworthiness standards. The DGCA coordinates with the International Civil Aviation Organisation and has its headquarters in New Delhi, with regional offices across India.
