India’s Coal Production Soars in June 2024

Coal India Limited Leads the Way

India’s coal production for June 2024 has surged to 84.63 million tonnes (MT), marking a 14.49% growth compared to the same period last year, which was 73.92 MT.

Coal India Limited’s Contribution

State-owned Coal India Limited (CIL) played a significant role in this growth, achieving a coal production of 63.10 MT in June 2024, an 8.87% increase from the previous year’s 57.96 MT.

Private and Captive Miners

Production from captive and other coal producers saw a substantial increase, producing 16.03 MT in June 2024, a 55.49% jump from 10.31 MT in June of the previous year. This highlights the growing role of private and captive miners in supplementing India’s coal supply.

Coal Dispatches

Total coal dispatches for June 2024 reached 85.76 MT, a 10.15% growth compared to 77.86 MT in the same month last year. CIL alone dispatched 64.10 MT, a 5.41% increase from 60.81 MT in June 2023. Dispatches from captive and other coal producers grew by 43.84%, from 11.30 MT to 16.26 MT.

Coal Stockpiles

As of June 30, 2024, coal companies held a stockpile of 95.02 MT, reflecting a robust annual growth rate of 41.68%. Thermal power plants (TPP) also saw a significant rise in coal stocks, with reserves reaching 46.70 MT, marking an annual growth of 30.15%. This increase is crucial for ensuring uninterrupted power supply across the country, especially during peak demand periods.

Atma Nirbhar Bharat

These gains in coal production and stockpiling align with the Indian government’s vision of ‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India).
